Welcome to Bhutan
Bhutan is today a unique and exotic tourist destination. While crowds, traffic jams and multi-national corporations mark most of the countries in the region, Bhutan is a serene land in the heart of the Himalayas where the air and the environment are not polluted and where visitors can trek, enjoy the culture, the intriguing religious festivals and the green and snow-clad mountainous scenery.
Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage is visible in traditional woven garments, prayer flags, religious mask dances, folk dances, songs and reverence for the natural environment. It is to safeguard this rich natural environment and culture that the country has consciously adopted a controlled tourism policy. In 1999, just over 7,000 tourists visited the country.
For the few who do get
an opportunity to travel to Bhutan, there are a wide variety of activities —
from the “Snowman trek” to kayaking down the Mochhu, bird watching, trout
fishing, attending colorful festivals in the fortresses to the panoramic
mountain flight on Druk Air.
